Big Hearts: All set for a summer of fun!

The summer has arrived, and Big Hearts is looking forward to another exciting lineup of activities! Our charity will continue to engage with participants across all programmes throughout the school holidays, offering a variety of events and initiatives.

Throughout the summer months, Big Hearts will continue to tackle holiday hunger and social isolation by inviting up to 25 young people to Tynecastle Park for our brand-new School’s Out! Lunch Club. Thanks to sponsorship from our neighbours at The North British Distillery, 8-12 year-olds will enjoy a free meal with a safe space to relax, play games and meet new friends!

This initiative will run each Wednesday from 5th July until 9th August (excluding 19th and 26th July) and is open to all who feel they would benefit from this service. If the Lunch Club is of interest to you/your child, please contact Scott Ritchie, Big Hearts Project Manager to register a place: scott.ritchie@bighearts.org.uk or 07552 860 062.

Our popular School’s Out! programme returns every weekday between 17th and 28th July and will welcome up to 25 children referred by local schools. Our charity was delighted to receive funding from our longtime partner Radio Forth Cash for Kids, allowing us to help isolated young people to thrive outside the school term and continue making positive differences in South-West Edinburgh.

This year the group will enjoy a range of exciting days out including an adrenaline filled trip to Foxlake in Dunbar and a tour of the Edinburgh Chocolatarium. Young people will be provided with a free hot meal and can take part in a range of fun activities including arts and crafts, outdoor games and a music workshop.

Big Hearts’ Kinship Care After School Club are off to Dalkeith Country Park to climb, slide, explore, run and fly as they experience Fort Douglas Adventure Park! While participants from our teenage group – That’s Me! are off on an exhilarating slide down the Pentland Hills as they have a fun night tubing.

Our charity’s reminiscence programme –  Football and Edinburgh Memories, will continue to meet weekly. Sessions take place every Monday and Tuesday from 13.30 – 15.00 at Tynecastle Park and participants can enjoy weekly quizzes while recalling fond memories from the past.

The Warm Welcome Lunch Club, in partnership with Cyrenians, will continue to run every Wednesday from 12pm – 2pm in the 1874 Fan’s Bar at Tynecastle Park. Each week we invite people living or working in the local area to come together at the home of Heart of Midlothian FC, to enjoy a free hot bowl of food in a warm space with lovely people. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book in advance.

In September, Switching Play will return for it’s third cohort! This 5-week programme is for young people aged 14-18 who may be feeling isolated and are looking for a fresh start to build a better path going.
