Off the bench: new youth initiative to launch at Tynecastle Park

From June 2021, Big Hearts will be delivering the SPFL Trust’s Off the Bench initiative, a major new programme for young people aimed at preventing anti-social behaviour.

Funded by the Scottish Government’s CashBack scheme, Off the Bench is a 16-week programme for 18-24-year-olds.

One day a week, from our facilities at Tynecastle Park, these young people will be able to attend courses, split between class time and physical activity, to help them build a better path, going forward.

Big Hearts is delighted to be one of five community trusts bringing the project to a football ground across Scotland.

Our charity will proudly deliver Off the Bench at Tynecastle Park, home of Heart of Midlothian FC, and work alongside the other selected clubs: St Mirren, Falkirk, Dundee and Motherwell.

Who’s eligible to take part?
The project is for young people aged 18 to 24 who have committed, or are likely to commit offences or engage in anti-social behaviour. This can include, but is not limited to offences in and around football games.

What will they get from the project?
Off the Bench has a strong focus on delivering certificate-based courses. This include for example, the Scottish FA Level 1.1 Coaching badge, SportsLeader Award, Approach Saltire Award and SQA Employability qualifications (SCQF Level 4). There will be opportunities to join the Scottish FA’s Volunteer Inspire Programme.

How to refer a young person?
Please note that self-referrals are not open at the moment.
All referrals should be made by public agencies or third sector organisations.
Please email connor.mcnally@bighearts.org.uk or download the Off the Bench Referral Leaflet.
You can also fill in the SPFL Trust contact form: click here.
