Returning for its 4th year next week, Big Hearts are excited to welcome back our School’s Out! project to Tynecastle Park. Originally set to tackle holiday hunger, the programme also enables local young people to thrive outside the school term and have a safe place to spend their summer.

School’s Out! will welcome up to 50 children referred to us by the local schools, and will run on weekday afternoons between 5th and 30th July. To ensure safety of participants and staff against Covid-19, this year’s project will be delivered into two groups, with family parcels being distributed to cover the remainder of the school holidays.

Big Hearts staff have been working on a range of exciting activities including arts and crafts, fun outdoor games and both groups will get the opportunity to attend a specially designed radio workshop hosted by Radio Forth and Hearts’ very own Mark Martin.

Young people from our Kinship Care programme will also get to enjoy a free week of Hearts’ Holiday Football, thanks to a kind donation from The Federation of Hearts Supporters Association.

Child poverty in the Gorgie/Dalry area is currently at 35%, remaining the highest rate in Edinburgh. This summer 2021 will see the return to the level of support provided prior to the pandemic, with food provisions, social connections, physical and wellbeing activities available at Tynecastle Park.

Big Hearts continue its close partnership with teachers from Tynecastle High School supporting school pupils at risk of poverty and social isolation in South West Edinburgh. Our charity is thrilled to have received £4,000 funding from longtime partner Radio Forth Cash for Kids. We are also proud to partner with the Mental Health Foundation to deliver School’s Out! as part of the ‘Get into the summer’ Thrive Edinburgh Summer Programme.

We would like to thank all of our partners and sponsors for their continued support, including our recent Kiltwalk supporters whose amazing fundraising efforts will allow us to make a significant difference within the local community this July.
