Big Hearts & Fostering Compassion

Big Hearts is delighted to be working closely with Fostering Compassion on an initiative to provide support for Kinship Care children during the Easter Holidays.

The Big Hearts Fostering Compassion project will work closely with 16 children and their carers over 3 different workshops held at Tynecastle, Gorgie City Farm and the Five Sisters Zoo. The workshops seek to give the children a chance to connect with and learn from animals.

Research shows that children who have had difficult and traumatic starts in life may struggle to express their emotions and this applies to many Kinship Care children. Through Fostering Compassion we hope to help these vulnerable children through fun days out, activities and workshops all created around the world of animals and nature. These all provide different and varied experiences that help to develop the child’s emotional literacy and resilience, helping them to find new and healthier ways to express their emotions.

Big Hearts General Manager Caryn Kerr said:

“We are delighted to be working with Fostering Compassion and believe these workshops will have a really positive effect on the kids and carers, many of whom we already work closely with at our Kinship Care After School Club. It is also fantastic to be working closely with Gorgie City Farm and Five Sisters Zoo to give the children and carers great experiences.”

The first workshop, “Hollydays”, takes place on March 30th in the Gorgie Suite at Tynecastle.
